GEELONG council has agreed to provide $6 million towards the stage four redevelopment of Simonds Stadium, but the starting time of reconstruction remains in doubt because of the conditions attached to the grant.

The City of Greater Geelong decided on Tuesday night funding would be given on the condition the State Government assumes management and operations of the stadium and the council would be absolved of any ongoing funding contributions.

They also stipulated that payments towards the cost of the stadium redevelopment would not be made until the end of the 2017-2018 financial year.

The soon to be established Kardinia Park trust had hoped for $1.5 million annual council funding of the precinct, but that request was knocked back, as was immediate funding.

Geelong CEO Brian Cook told the Geelong Advertiser he was still assessing what the conditions might mean for construction, but was cautiously optimistic a solution could be found.

"Our club's appreciative of a unanimous resolution by the council that they fund the $6 million," Cook said.

The AFL Commission tipped in $4 million last month to the redevelopment of Simonds Stadium, adding to the state government's $75 million contribution and the club's $4 million investment in the redevelopment.

The Cats hoped work would start immediately after the final home and away game in two weeks to confine any disruption to next season.

The project, budgeted to cost just above $90 million, will see the outdated Jennings and Brownlow stands reconstructed.

If the project starts at the end of the season, the disruption would be minimised to a reduced capacity in 2016 and potentially a delayed start to Cats' home games for the 2017 season.

Once completed, the stadium will seat 36,000 spectators and host other events in addition to AFL games.
