Geelong midfielder Steve Johnson will miss the Cats' blockbuster clash with the Sydney Swans on Saturday night after accepting a one-match suspension for striking Brisbane Lions midfielder Allen Christensen.

The match against the Swans was due to be Johnson’s 250th game, but he will now have to wait a week until the Cats take on Hawthorn at the MCG in round 20.

Johnson was reported by a boundary umpire for striking Christensen during the fourth quarter of Saturday’s match at Simonds Stadium.

The Match Review Panel assessed the incident as being low impact, high contact and intentional.

Johnson would have risked a two-game suspension if he had chosen to contest the charge at the tribunal, but he has opted to accept a one-match ban instead.

In Round 1, Johnson was charged with engaging in rough conduct against Hawthorn’s Sam Mitchell. Johnson accepted a $1000 sanction with an early plea.
