SCANS have confirmed that star Geelong midfielder Mitch Duncan suffered a broken foot during Saturday night's 43-point loss to the Sydney Swans at ANZ Stadium.

Duncan, who had been in career-best form, is now set to undergo surgery and is likely to be sidelined for 10 to 12 weeks.

"Mitch described a changing direction injury where he felt something in his foot," the club's head medico, Dr Drew Slimmon, told CatsTV on Monday.

"Subsequent scans have revealed a fracture of the fifth metatarsal, which is one of the bones on the outside of the foot.

"That injury often requires surgery, and that's what we're looking at doing for Mitch to give him the best opportunity of getting back as quickly as possible."

Although very disappointing, Duncan is hoping that he will be back on the field for the last part of the season.

"It is a bit annoying," the 23-year-old said. "I was just running, went to change direction and felt a little pop in my foot.

"I thought one of my studs had actually come off, but that wasn't the case.

"Hopefully … I'll be able to come back and contribute to the team in any way I can."
