PLAYING alongside Geelong skipper Joel Selwood when he is in a match-winning mood is an experience to remember according to teammate Mitch Duncan.

The Cats champion amassed 38 disposals, won eight centre clearances, had 23 contested possessions and kicked a goal in a dominant performance against Gold Coast on Sunday.

Chris Scott described his effort in the third quarter when the Cats needed a lift after trailing at half-time as amazing and Duncan agreed it was inspiring.

"He's an animal and I am honoured to play alongside him. He's a great one to watch and he brings everyone with him," Duncan told afl.com.au.

"He brought the whole 21 with him today to get us over the line. He's just an extraordinary player."

It was a massive effort from Selwood as he had begun the season in less than exceptional form, with the defensive side of his game nowhere near its best.

He also struggled to quell the Suns in the first half, with Gold Coast midfielder Michael Rischitelli's stoppage goal in the second quarter exposing the dangers of Selwood's attacking instinct.

However the triple best and fairest winner did not go into his shell. He kept attacking the game and his teammates responded to his efforts.

"It started with Joel and he brought other players with him," Duncan said.

Selwood's effort broke a four-game losing streak for the Cats that began in last year's qualifying final but also kept his enviable record in place of never having being part of three successive losses in one season.

It is a record the fortunate, but skilled Duncan shares.

Duncan said his own performance was an improvement on what had been an average start to the season.

"It's been a slow start which is disappointing … I haven't had a great start to the season so to get a bit of the ball this week and I thought I played my role pretty well so that is a start," Duncan said.
