GEELONG midfielder Jimmy Bartel has been subbed out of the game against Gold Coast at Simonds Stadium after hurting his left knee during the first quarter.

Suns midfielder Michael Rischitelli collected Bartel's knee as he slid in to win a loose ball in the centre of the ground.

However, Rischitelli received a free kick for high contact rather than Bartel receiving the free under the sliding rule that was introduced in 2014.

Bartel went to ground before managing to run off the field unassisted.

However, he was immediately replaced by substitute Nakia Cockatoo.

The Cats confirmed Bartel had suffered a knee injury, with the club tweeting: “Bartel has a knee problem. We’ll keep you updated with the prognosis as best we can”.

Bartel has had a unlucky start to the season, missing round two through concussion.

The loss of Bartel further weakens the Cats' line-up after Tom Hawkins was a late withdrawal before the game.

More to come.
