Josh Caddy is among many leading the younger brigade of midfielders in the Geelong playing group. The solid on-baller was a standout performer throughout 2014, his second season at the cattery saw him establish himself as an important cog in the Cats’ midfield. Prior to the 2014 season, there was significant interest in fantasy circles as the Cat was considered as a prime ‘breakout’ candidate. However, after an impressive opening round to the season, Caddy was somewhat quiet until a training injury sidelined him until round 14.

Upon re-enlistment to the senior side, Caddy was subject to consecutive substitute roles before finding his feet once again. The second half of the 2014 season saw Caddy boast impressive fantasy numbers while solidifying himself amongst the potent Geelong midfield. Caddy is held in the highest of regards at his second club after crossing over from Gold Coast in 2012 and has been touted as a future leader of the club.

In his early days as an U/18 prospect, Caddy was highly rated. Captaining his side in the U/18 Championships, he caught the eye of many suitors and fantasy coaches as he made his way to Gold Coast at pick seven. Now 22, Caddy shows all the signs for an elite breakout and is priced generously for coaches willing to take the punt.

Three 100+ scores in the back end of 2014 showed the calibre of Caddy’s potential in both a fantasy and pure footballing perspective. He was sublime in Geelong’s narrow semi-final loss collecting 26 disposals and a goal. With the Cats coming so close to the big dance in 2014, Caddy has signalled his hunger to win a premiership and is in the right environment to do so.

While his desire to win a flag is undeniable, Caddy, like most of his younger teammates will be essential to reinstate Geelong among the top tier come season’s end. His tenacity around the contest and inside ball winning ability is one attribute he has demonstrated more than the younger midfield brigade. Caddy ranked second among Geelong’s inside midfielders in 2014 despite playing 16 games and recorded career highs in disposals, contested possessions, clearances and score assists.

Caddy continues his trend of boasting career best figures year on year, there is no question he will be able to breakout in 2015. The Cats’ ranked 14th in clearances throughout the 2014 season, with Caddy later stating his eagerness to rectify that statistic. Caddy’s promising 2014 was just one stepping stone away from establishing himself as one of the AFL’s premier inside midfielders and 2015 could be the year he makes that leap.
