At a celebration today, to mark the successful first year of operation of the Deakin Cats Community Centre, Premier Dr Denis Napthine MP announced a $5 million momentum funding commitment by the Victorian Government to support the continued redevelopment of Simonds Stadium.

Dr Napthine said Simonds Stadium was Australia’s leading regional stadium and provided major economic and community benefits for the Geelong region.

Geelong Cats Chief Executive Brian Cook welcomed the government’s commitment.

“The Victorian Government wants to get the ball rolling on the redevelopment of the stadium which will include increased capacity and enhanced community facilities,”  CEO Brian Cook said.

“We thank the Victorian Government for the support of this important project, which will enable us to continue to plan for future development here at Simonds Stadium.

“There is much yet to do to bring the Stadium to completion, but this is an important step in the process.

“Simonds Stadium has become a precious icon for our city, region and community and it is critical that the momentum of investment by the Club, the City of Greater Geelong, the AFL and the Victorian and Federal Governments is continued,” Cook said.

The redevelopment will provide Simonds with the potential to host an increased number of national and international events, such as T20 Big Bash games, soccer, rugby league, rugby union, concerts, as well as other entertainment and cultural events.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Premier and Minister for Rural and Regional Development Hon Peter Ryan MP, Minister for Sport Hon Damian Drum MP and a large number of representatives of the Cats many community partners.
