The Cats are coming off a six day break and a punishing encounter in the wet against the Bulldogs. Are there some fresh legs to help the Cats against Melbourne on Saturday? We look at the candidates.

Mitch Brown
Brown sidled up next to Liam Jones for most of the day on Sunday and whilst Jones finished with three majors, Brown was not outplayed on the day. Finishing with 13 disposals, seven marks and seven rebounds from 50, Brown showed his is more than capable of filling in for the Cats in the AFL defence or perhaps even a return to the forwardline.

Billie Smedts
With two games back in the VFL, Smedts is ticking all the boxes for the Cats with a strong attitude and class at the lower level. In trying conditions, Smedts finished with 13 disposals, eight tackles and four inside 50s. The Cats will be comfortable bringing Smedts back to the highest level should the need arise.

Lincoln McCarthy
Probably still a few weeks away from serious consideration for senior selection but McCarthy provides the Cats with a forward line presence currently not there. A ferocious tackler and classy user of the ball, the diminutive McCarthy finished Sunday with seven touches, a couple of tackles and a goal in limited playing time.

James Kelly
Kelly was a late withdrawal for the Cats and would have been ruing not playing in conditions that would have suited him thoroughly. Expect Kelly to slot back into the Cats defence or midfield for the Demons clash.

Jesse Stringer
A victim of the lack of spots available in the AFL side, Stringer continues to impress at VFL level for the Cats. 10 touches, five tackles and three clearances told only part of the story for his strong game.

Dawson Simpson
Simpson was a late exclusion from the Cats AFL side and lined up in the VFL curtain raiser. In very limited game time, Simpson finished with four touches and 17 hitouts. The Cats have been experimenting with its best ruck line up all year and will assess it again ahead of the Demons clash.

Jarrad Jansen
Jansen continued his fine debut VFL season with an eye catching performance on Sunday. A team high 19 disposals, eight tackles and five clearances were just reward for the strong bodied midfielder. Whether the Cats think he needs more time to develop his game or whether he could be a contested spark for the AFL side remains to be seen.
