The Cats defensive game style faces the ultimate test against the offensive pressure of the Hawks on Easter Monday. Premiership defender Tom Lonergan and AFL journalist Scott Gullan spoke to Cats TV about which approach is more likely to secure victory.

“All the old coaches will tell you, defence wins premierships. So I would say it’s got to be in the Cats favour,” Gullan said in Argue the Toss this week.

“If you’ve got the rock solid defence which this teams got; the same guys are there, they’ve done it, they do it in big games, to me, that’s ahead of offence.

“Obviously (the Hawks) are very potent because they’ve got so many options but you’ve got to lock down defence.

“They’ve got (Josh) Gibson, but they’ve got a few holes, (Brian) Lake won’t be back, so to me, if I’m Geelong going in with a better defence I’m happy,” Gullan said.

In a top-of-the-table battle, undefeated Geelong take on an undefeated Hawthorn outfit in an absolute blockbuster at the MCG.

“They’ve got such beautiful users of the footy, all over the ground,” Lonergan told Cats TV.

“They switch the ball, they come up through the middle, they hit up those short little leads – they’re very unpredictable – they don’t just bomb the ball long or anything like that.

“We’ll just have to watch a bit of footage and hopefully get a good start. We’ll be in for a tough match no worries,” Lonergan said.
