Life Membership

BACKGROUND

The Constitution of the Geelong Football Club Ltd allows for the Board to “annually elect as Life Members any person who has rendered outstanding service”.

PURPOSE

This policy has been developed to provide guidance to the Geelong Cats Board with respect to the election of people as Life Members of the Club.

DEFINITIONS

The club means the Geelong Football Club Limited
Players means players and Club’s current playing lists including senior listed players, rookie listed players and Victorian Football League listed players.
Life Member means a member who has been elected to life membership.

AIMS

This policy aims to ensure that the Life Membership is awarded for long and outstanding service to the Geelong Cats.

APPLICATION

This policy applies to all Directors, staff, players, volunteers and consultants associated with the Club.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Board is responsible for:

Reviewing nominations for Life Membership consistent with this policy
Awarding Life Memberships

CEO

Receiving nominations and ensuring process has been followed

Nominator

Nominating individuals for Life Membership in accordance with the procedures outlined in the policy

Nominee

Endorsing the nomination for Life Membership in accordance with the procedures outlined in the policy

POLICY PRINCIPALS/GUIDELINES

1. General
These Guidelines have been approved by the Board consistent with the Club’s constitution.

Each complete nomination for election is to be forwarded in the first instance to the Chief Executive Officer who will forward copies of it and all other relevant information to the Board for consideration.
The Board may at its discretion annually elect as Life Members any person who has rendered outstanding service to the Club.
The name of each Life Member shall be entered on to the Register.
Any person elected to Life Membership shall be exempt from payment of any further subscription but shall nevertheless be entitled to all the privileges and benefits and be subject to the same liabilities and duties as an Ordinary Member.

2. Criteria for Life Membership

The election of a Life Member is recognition by the Club of long and outstanding service to the Geelong Cats by a member.
This honour may be bestowed on a person by the Club at any appropriate time, and is not linked necessarily with that person’s retirement from the Club.
An outstanding service to the Club is one which:
a.) results in the Club being substantially, demonstrably and positively changed by that contribution, and
b.) ongoing commitment which occurs over a significant period of time (minimum of 10 years), and
c.) required substantial, commendable and regular personal input, and
d.) exemplifies our Clubs values, and
Automatic Life membership will be awarded for:
a.) 150 senior games as a player, and/or
b.) 10 senior seasons with a minimum of 100 senior games (this may include a year of injury), and/or
c.) 10 years service on the Board
Board of Directors can decide the number of Life Memberships awarded in any one calendar year. Notwithstanding the above criteria, the Board may also at its discretion annually elect as Life Members any person who has rendered outstanding service to the Club.
Nominations will not be considered if more than three years have passed (in the opinion of the Board) since the primary component(s) of the outstanding service (on which the nomination for Life Membership is being judged) was completed or made. This places the onus on proposers/nominators to act promptly and ensures that worthy would be contemporary recipients are not displaced from the period in which their contributions should be recognised.

3. Procedure for Nomination
Any current member of the Club who wishes to have a person considered for nomination for Life Membership may complete and forward a submission to that effect in writing to the Chief Executive Officer.

A nomination for election of a person for Life Membership shall be made on the official nomination form and be accompanied by the required supporting information. The official nomination form is available from the Board secretary.

Each nomination for Life Membership shall be endorsed by:
a) The Nominee, and
b) Two members supporting the nomination.

4. Procedures for awarding a Life Member
All applications for Life Membership will be reviewed annually by the Board (usually by August in any calendar year) for consideration and recommendation.

Election to Life Membership shall be by a majority of Board members.

Life Membership will be awarded to the member at the Best and Fairest.
