There is no greater honour than to be recognised by your peers, and in the world of AFL football where courage is seen as a prerequisite to play, there may be no greater compliment than to be seen as the most courageous of them all.

Geelong’s Joel Selwood was named as the AFLPA’s most courageous player, taking home the award named after former Collingwood and Footscray star Robert Rose, who became a quadriplegic after a car accident in 1974.

Selwood received 248 votes and finished ahead of Brett Kirk (132) and Lenny Hayes (91).

Selwood has been recognised for his courage since debuting in the opening game of the 2007 season. His attack on the ball and willingness to go hard from start to finish has won him the respect of the football world. And it obviously did not go unnoticed by his peers.

Geelong players have fared well in recent seasons among their peers, with Gary Ablett winning MVP over the each of the past three years, Tom Harley earning best captain honours last year and Selwood claiming best first year player in 2007.
