The 2008 season marked Brendan’s ninth as an assistant coach with the Cats and saw him reach the grand final for the second straight year. He is the longest tenured assistant coach on the Cats match committee and was key member of the 2007 premiership success. McCartney joined Geelong in 2000 after two seasons as reserves coach at Richmond. He led the Tigers second string to the finals twice and boasted a 63% winning percentage.
He led spent his first seven seasons at Skilled Stadium over seeing the Cats’ highly rated defensive unit. In 2004 Geelong had the AFL’s number one rated defense, allowing the fewest points of any team that year.
McCartney began his coaching career at Newtown in the Geelong Football League, leading the reserves in 1990. He went on to outstanding success at Ocean Grove in the Bellarine Football League, taking the Grubbers to four consecutive premierships. He posted a 84-16 win-loss mark at Ocean Grove before landing at Punt Road.
McCartney has been in the Geelong coaches’ box for 210 games, and coupled with his 43 games with Richmond, he ranks as one of the league’s most experienced assistant coaches.

PLAYING CAREER
Brendan McCartney played 87 senior games with Newtown in the Geelong & District and the Geelong Football Leagues. He was a member of two premiership teams, including the 1978 triumph over North Shore as a teenager.
His second premiership came in 1982 as Newtown defeated St Peters. After seven seasons of senior football, McCartney concentrated on an athletic career before returning in 1990.
Overall, McCartney played over 150 games in total with Newtown at senior, reserves and under 18 level.
